Tips & Tricks for training

Training outdoors: Winter

¨ Appropriate footwear.  Thermal socks if cold

¨ Windbreaker pants over workout pants if windy, wet or cold

¨ Wind/water proof jacket over a fleece coat/top for running

¨ Layers of jackets or shirts are suitable for power walking & conditioning and running

¨ Wind proof gloves if cold.

¨ Head band with or without a fleece liner.  The liner helps avoid itching when you sweat during exercise

¨ A hat.  A hat is a good idea when it is cold, you can lose a lot of heat from the top of your head!  A hat acts to protect your head, face and eyes from the sun and helps prevent sun stroke.

¨ Babies can be dressed in a similar fashion to their Mum or Dad.  Layers are always your best bet as you can easily make adjustments if the weather changes.

¨ Babies should be protected from the wind whether they are in a jogger, stroller or carrier.  Plastic cover or a UV shield both act as a great barrier for wind on strollers.  Check out the neat fleece cover-ups that are made for the baby carriers.

¨ SUN BLOCK.  Babies over 6 months can wear sun block.   This includes Mums & Dad’s.

¨ Sunglasses.  Mum & baby can strut their stuff and protect their eyes.

Cool ‘Baby Jogger Friendly’ running routes in Kingston

Below are quick summaries of great routes for Mum and baby.  Our running groups use these routes on a regular basis.

If you are unsure of the route feel free to contact us for more information.

Enjoy!

2 km—Lemoine Point sprint distance route;  Park in the Front Street lot of the Conservation Area,  enter the park run left on gravel route, follow the route always bearing to the right on the gravel route,  follow the loop around and back to the parking lot where you started.   This trail is posted as a wheel chair accessible route.

5 km—Lemoine Point short distance route; park in the Front Street lot;  enter the park and run left on the gravel path trail #1, continue along following Route #1, at the fork in the path go left on Route #3,  continue along until you see route #1 posted again and follow route #1 along the lake for just over 2 km, when you see the signage for the Privies at another fork in the path take the gravel path right, run past the picnic benches, stay  the right and follow the gravel path for 2 km back to the parking lot.  Fun Run on a sunny dry day!  If it has rained recently be prepared to get a little muddy. All in good fun!

7 km—Portsmouth Olympic Harbour moderate distance;  park in the Harbour Lot near the Play Unit,  run south towards the lake in the parking lot, past the marina towards the Coastguard office, there is a narrow path between the office and the lake, take it, continue along the path with the lake on your left side, over the bridge, past the pier, travel through the park and into Lake Ontario Park,  hang a left down the steep drive way at the boat launch in the park, bear to the right at the bottom of the hill follow the path bearing right, at the fork in the path go left toward the apartment building,  follow the path with the lake on your left, in front of the apartment building, around the Bay, alongside the Townhouses to the back around to the next Bay until you get to Front Road, turn right and follow the sidewalk until you get to the entrance for the townhouses, turn right and run towards the lake until you return top your original path, turn left and re-trace your route back to the start point.  No traffic, smooth and hilly but very scenic!  Love it.  The Run/walk group runs this route from time to time.

10 km—Little Cat Conservation area moderate distance run.  I will be post more details about the runs at Little Cat Conservation Area soon but for now ….. when you enter you can refer to the trail map for at least 2 good options with distances marked.  Please note that there is a fee to enter the Conservation area.  The fee varies but it should not be more than $2-$10 for a car full, I hope.  It is worth it any way.

8, 12, 16 and 22 km routes and maps for each route coming soon!!  Really!

Text Box: Tips to ensure that your baby is safe & comfortable
in a jogger

Ensure that your baby is properly strapped in using a 5 point restraint

The back rest should be fully reclined for babies under 6 months of age

The baby’s head should be stabilized using rolled up blankets or towels on either side of their head

Run on quiet, smooth and traffic free terrain with babies under 6-8 months of age

Babies 6-8 months or older in a running stroller sitting upright should wear a helmet if travelling on uneven terrain or near traffic of any kind

Attach a wind shield on the jogger if windy or cold. Some babies prefer not to have wind in their face at all.

Dress your baby appropriately for the weather. Layers are a good idea so that you can easily remove or add them for comfort.
